UW DOCTOR STRANDJORD DIES AT 70.(News)(Obituary) - Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Dr. Paul Strandjord, founder of the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine, was known for helping young people achieve their goals.

Dr. Strandjord died Friday of a stroke. He was 70.

He joined the UW medical school in 1969, retiring in 1994 after 25 years as chairman of the laboratory medicine department.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 9625 N.E. Eighth St., Bellevue.

Dr. Strandjord served as president of the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists. The academy's research awards are the Paul E. Strandjord Young Investigator Awards.

He was born April 5, 1931, in Minneapolis, the son of Edphil Nels Strandjord and RuBelle Corneliusen Strandjord. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Minnesota and his medical doctorate from Stanford University.

Dr. Strandjord is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Strandjord; two sons, Thomas, UW associate professor of pediatrics, and Scott, a vice president at Swedish Health Services; two daughters-in-law, Dana and Linda; and five grandchildren: Kristin, Tyler, Kirk, Corrie and Sarah.
