Amanda Knox wept with relief as an Italian appeals court overturned her murder conviction and 26-year prison sentence in connection with 2007 killing of Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy. A day later, she was back home in Seattle, tearfully thanking supporters.

Rudy Guede, a drifter who was found guilty and sentenced to 16 years for Kercher's death, implicated Knox and her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian. But experts found that the DNA evidence used against Knox and Sollecito, who was also freed, was unreliable.

Cancer claims life of Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs, who co-founded Apple when he was 21 and was the dynamo behind the company's groundbreaking products, died at age 56 after battling a form of pancreatic cancer. Jobs resigned as Apple CEO in August, citing his failing health.

Bruce Newman of the San Jose Mercury News summed up his legacy: 'Jobs transformed the computer from an intimidating piece of business machinery -- its blinking lights often caged behind a glass wall -- into a device people considered 'personal' and then indispensable.'

Providence, Swedish unveil plan

Two of the region's largest hospital systems say they will join and create a nonprofit entity. The CEOs of Swedish and Providence portrayed it as an economic necessity. The arrangement would include Swedish Health Services in Washington, which operates five hospitals and clinics in King, Snohomish and Kittitas counties, and Providence Health & Services operations in King, Snohomish, Thurston and Lewis counties.

Afghanistan War marks decade

President Obama marked the 10th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan by praising the military and renewing his pledge to turn over the nation's security to the Afghans themselves by 2014.

Barnes & Noble to leave U Village?

Barnes & Noble says it plans to close its University Village bookstore in Seattle because it hasn't been able to come to terms on a new lease. An official of the shopping center would not confirm the closure.
